Preparing For a Car Trip

If you’re planning a long car journey, there are crucial points to consider. I want to explain this with my experience of driving different vehicles in Europe and various geographies. Start by examining the car’s physical condition from the outside to inside.

  • Checking the physical state of the tires in a well-lit environment is vital. Also, consider the tire type according to the season of your travel. The legal wear limit for tires is above 1.6 mm, but ideally, they should be above 2 mm, preferably over 5 mm, for a safe long journey. Adjust the tire pressures according to the number in the car’s own user manual.

  • Check if the rear stop lights, front low and high beams, and signal lights are working. Many countries require the use of daytime running lights; you can confirm these rules according to your route. For adequate night vision, ensure the headlights are properly aligned and the lamps provide sufficient lighting.

  • Also, from outside, ensure there are no cracks in the windows and mirrors. Additionally, inspect the cars underside for the exhaust, mudguards, and engine guard to see if they appear robust.

  • Check the car’s engine oil, coolant, windshield washer fluid, brake hydraulic fluid, and transmission oil before a long journey. These checks are generally applicable to internal combustion engines but can also be considered for electric vehicles.

  • Examine the car’s battery and charging dynamo. A weak battery might drain during a stop on a long journey, so ensure it’s in good condition.

  • Regardless of the travel season, check the heating and cooling system to prevent issues like fogging and ensure comfort during both winter and summer.

  • Inspect the brake discs and pads; never start a journey with a worn-out brake system as it can increase braking distance and pose a risk. Brake fluid, typically replaced every two years, is vital since its properties can degrade with moisture absorption or prolonged use, affecting brake performance.

  • Prepare emergency supplies like a spare tire and a first-aid kit. Consider a roadside assistance subscription, either added to your insurance or through a third-party service.

  • Do not forget to take snacks, water and other drinks and a few basic medicines for the journey. Use several different map applications for your route.
